The Statute for Autonomy for Galicia was passed in 1936. The language acquired recognition as the "official language of Galicia" for the first time. This very important achivement was never put into pratice because of the start of the Civil War (1936). The flame of Galician culture, language and identity was kept by those in exile. Meanwhile, in Galicia the language started to re-appear in the cultural sphere (poetic anthologies such as Benito Soto, suplement to the Santiago newspaper La Noche).
