The change from Latin to Galician was continuous and gradual. It is impossible
to say when did Latin become Galician. In the eighth century the language
written by both the Church and Administration was so different from the
spoken language that they could be considered two separate languages.

The oldest known document written in Galician is the poem Ora faz ost'o Senhor de Navarra by Joam Soares de Paiva, written around 1200. The first non-literary documents in Galician date from the early thirteenth century.
